Straws / Hex Bang – De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, 20.08.2016

Straws / Hex Bang is the composition we like to close our live set with,  it neatly deploys all twelve glass spinning machines at our disposal. The piece uses a whole tone series of notes, where only two possible modes of six notes are possible, one set of notes which ascend in whole tones F4 G4 A4 B4 C#5 D#5  are followed by F#4 G#4 A#4 C5 D5 E5.

Everyday drinking straws are placed into each glass which gives a striking percussive quality. For our finale, we play both sets of whole tones simultaneously and introduce fast vibrational percussion with gongs and metal cups. The resulting sound is a fizzy, dense concoction with all the instruments shaking at oscillations between 300 to 800 times per second.

Agata’s video captures TD preparing the first set of six notes, by adding percussive straws just before the ensemble cross over the event horizon, into the ‘big bang’ of all twelve glass notes sounding…

Bass Hurdy Gurdy

imageIntroducing our new Bass Hurdy Gurdy. We aim to debut this new instrument at the ‘After Dark’ event in Dartington Estate, tomorrow night. It’s capable of reaching sub bass frequencies acoustically, with potentially infinite sustain, we love it!
