Straws / Hex Bang – De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, 20.08.2016

Straws / Hex Bang is the composition we like to close our live set with,  it neatly deploys all twelve glass spinning machines at our disposal. The piece uses a whole tone series of notes, where only two possible modes of six notes are possible, one set of notes which ascend in whole tones F4 G4 A4 B4 C#5 D#5  are followed by F#4 G#4 A#4 C5 D5 E5.

Everyday drinking straws are placed into each glass which gives a striking percussive quality. For our finale, we play both sets of whole tones simultaneously and introduce fast vibrational percussion with gongs and metal cups. The resulting sound is a fizzy, dense concoction with all the instruments shaking at oscillations between 300 to 800 times per second.
